Retracing Temporal-Linguistic Landscapes of ‘Refugee’ Film & Community Arts Toolkit
I propose to create an autoethnographic film which rewrites the narrative of refugee exodus and the film will feature within a public community arts toolkit. The film will explore the temporalities of ‘home’ and ‘history’ through the layered storytelling of the Vietnamese ‘refugee boat journey’ as intertwined intimate family history and ‘official’ global history of mass displacement. The film will be part of the experimental website and community resource ‘Collecting Through Absence Toolkit”, actionable practices to facilitate arts creation within communities, families, and classrooms as part of empowering, liberatory memory work. This project brings together archival and artistic fragments of displacement into a digital interface of community memory and public knowledge.
This project is funded in part by the UCLA Chancellor’s Arts Initiative Grant
